J T Mitchell Pre-Apprenticeship Academy

Long Beach, CA · Los Angeles County · Employment

JTM Academy empowers students to achieve sustainable careers in the mechanical trades and utility sector, bridging education with employment opportunities through community partnerships.

Originally founded in 1967 as the Labor Education Advancement Program (LEAP) by James T. Mitchell, a collaboration between the Los Angeles Urban League and building trade unions to prepare African American community members for union entrance exams; revived in 2014 by alumni due to declining Black representation in the trades. Offers free, year-round pre-apprenticeship classes in sheet metal work, electrical, pipe/steamfitting, glazing, and carpentry, partnering with the LA Urban League and SoCalGas. Reports 454 graduates, a 92% employment placement rate, and average starting wages of $72,000/year.
