Museum Of African American Art

The Museum of African American Art (MAAA) educates visitors about the arts through an African American cultural lens, operating on the principle that art can and should be part of daily life. Founded in 1976 by artist and art historian Dr. Samella Lewis, MAAA offers free admission and serves as a community gathering space.

Located on Level 2 of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, the Museum of African American Art was founded in 1976 by Dr. Samella Lewis and a group of academic, artistic, business, and community leaders to increase public awareness of African American art. The museum presents exhibitions drawn from its permanent collection, hosts school and university groups, maintains digitized archives supporting research by students, curators, and documentary filmmakers, and offers free admission to all visitors, Wednesday through Sunday.
