Community Coalition For Substance Abuse Prevention & Treatment

To transform the social and economic conditions that foster addiction, crime, violence and poverty in South Los Angeles by building a community institution that involves thousands of residents in creating, influencing and changing public policy.

Community Coalition (CoCo) is a South LA grassroots organization founded in 1990, in the wake of the crack cocaine epidemic, by community leaders including U.S. Rep. Karen Bass. CoCo organizes African American and Latino youth and adult residents around substance abuse prevention, education equity, housing justice, and police/criminal-justice reform. Programs include South Central Youth Empowered thru Action (SC-YEA), civic engagement and voter registration (Together We Vote), and policy campaigns that have won a fast-food restaurant moratorium and a disability-accessible park in South LA.
