Deaf West Theatre engages artists and audiences in unparalleled theater experiences inspired by Deaf culture and the expressive power of sign language, serving as the artistic bridge between the Deaf and hearing worlds.
Founded in 1991 by Ed Waterstreet and Linda Bove, Deaf West Theatre is a nonprofit performing arts company based in Los Angeles producing sign-language theater. Productions are performed in American Sign Language with simultaneous voice interpretation, making theater accessible to both Deaf and hearing audiences. Since 2012 the company has been led by Artistic Director DJ Kurs, staging Tony Award-nominated productions including Big River and Spring Awakening, and providing workshops and training for Deaf youth from underserved communities.
