Provide a safe and positive environment for Long Beach youth to learn and grow through basketball, mentorship, and education as an alternative to violence.
Hoops After Dark, a program of California Youth Empowerment Services (CalYES), is described as the only evening violence-prevention program in Long Beach combining sports and education. Since 2021 it has trained and coached youth ages 16-27 through late-night basketball leagues, youth empowerment workshops, and a Safe Passage Program, aiming to build leadership, nonviolence, and social connectedness during peak hours of potential violence.
